The Savu Collection
Inspired by the Finnish tradition of smoke fired sauna -Savusauna- this collection of work is decorated entirely by smoke and flame. In a world full of rush and busy it can be easy to feel a little overwhelmed at times. This collection is designed to soothe. It offers you the chance to lose yourself, just for a moment in the patterns created by dancing flames and curling smoke, a chance to centre and become calm. I love to do that.
The Savu Collection pieces are slip cast using white earthenware, fired up to a maximum of 1000C in electric kiln and then smoke fired. Smoke firing is a process which involves placing the pieces in a container filled with a mix of sawdust, leaves and seaweed and setting fire to the top, experiencing a moment of pure joy as you watch the flames dance, then waiting until they die down to a genial puff and lick of smoke, then putting a lid over the top. This gentle firing can take in excess of 24 hours. During the firing the smoke, minerals and wood resin penetrate the clay body leaving unique patterns on each piece. The work is then sealed with beeswax and hand polished to a high sheen.
Due to the nature of smoke fired work these pieces are suitable for decorative, indoor use only and will not hold liquids. No two pieces are the same, photographs are representative of the collection
